ECAL metabolic testing and programs built on your physiology — not a template.
Metabolic health shapes how you feel, move and age — your energy, your strength, your body composition, and your long-term risk of conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Whether you're building fitness and strength, managing a metabolic risk your GP has flagged, or trying to shift weight that keeps coming back, we start by measuring how your body actually produces and uses energy — then build a plan from there, not from estimates.
ECAL metabolic testing is a short, non-invasive breathing test — a form of indirect calorimetry. By analysing the air you breathe out at rest, it estimates your resting metabolic rate (the energy your body uses at rest) and the mix of fat and carbohydrate you're burning while resting. It's a clear, objective snapshot of where your resting metabolism sits today, and a useful starting point for your program.
It's worth being clear about what one resting test can and can't tell you. A single resting measurement does not, on its own, establish your insulin sensitivity or fully characterise your metabolic flexibility — how readily your body switches between burning fat and carbohydrate. Those questions call for different tools: metabolic flexibility is formally assessed using defined challenges, such as exercise or a meal or glucose load, and markers like insulin sensitivity are tracked through blood tests with your GP. We use the resting test for what it does well, and combine it with the right additional measures when a fuller picture matters.
From your results, we build a specific lifestyle and exercise plan aimed at improving your fitness, strength and metabolic health — the intensity you train at, how you fuel around it, and the habits that support change. It's targeted to you, not generic advice. We offer practical nutrition guidance within our scope as exercise physiologists, and refer you to a dietitian in our network when individualised nutrition care is needed.
Paired with InBody body composition scanning, we can track what's changing over time — fat mass, skeletal muscle mass and visceral fat — so progress is based on real measurements, not just the scales. With a consistent program, many clients see their body composition and metabolic markers move in the right direction. Everyone responds differently, and individual results vary.
We set goals against things we can actually measure, and re-test to see how they're tracking:
Together these give you and your GP an objective, joined-up picture of your metabolic health over time — measured, reviewed and adjusted as you go.
We feed back to your GP and work in line with their management, so your care is joined up rather than running in parallel. Your metabolic and body composition results go to them in a clear, clinician-ready report, and we track the markers we can measure here — resting metabolic rate, resting fuel use, visceral fat and muscle mass — over time, alongside the blood markers your GP orders, such as insulin sensitivity and glucose control.
If your doctor has prescribed a GLP-1 medication, a significant share of the weight you lose can come from muscle, not just fat — and the scales can't tell the difference. That's exactly where our testing earns its place. Medication decisions always remain with your prescribing doctor — our role is the exercise physiology and body-composition side.
We scan on the InBody through your treatment to track whether the weight you're losing is fat or skeletal muscle — and we prescribe the resistance training to help protect and build muscle while it comes down. The aim is an objective, measured picture, for you and your GP, of how your body composition is changing on the medication: ideally fat mass and visceral fat falling while muscle mass is protected. It turns a number on the scales into a clearer picture of your metabolic health. Individual results vary.
Our cornerstone Comprehensive Metabolic Assessment combines ECAL metabolic testing with InBody body composition analysis — around 45 minutes, completely non-invasive, and the foundation for everything that follows.

From there, your results drive an individualised plan: 1:1 exercise physiology, semi-private sessions or clinical classes, with re-testing scheduled so you can see your metabolism and body composition change — not just the scales.
